On September 28, 1961, NBC began airing the hit comedy series, Hazel. The sitcom aired on the same channel until March 25, 1965. CBS continued airing the show, running from September 13, 1965 to April 1966.
Hazel, which lasted five seasons with 154 episodes, focused on the experiences of Hazel Burke, played by Shirley Booth, as a stay-in maid for the Baxter family. Other main cast members included Don DeFore, Whitney Blake and Bobby Buntrock.
Recurring roles in the comedy series were portrayed by Ann Jillian, Lauren Gilbert, Donald Foster, Norma Varden, Howard Smith, Robert Williams, Cathy Lewis, Lynn Borden and Julia Benjamin, among other stars.
For two consecutive years starting 1962, Booth won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Continued Performance by an Actress in a Series. She was also nominated for Golden Globe Award in 1964 for Best Female TV Star.
Most of the episodes of Hazel were directed by William D. Russell. In addition to Key, Robert Riley Crutcher and William Cowley wrote numerous episodes for the American sitcom.
